Personal Development

At Royds Hall, our ethos of “Valuing people, supporting personal best” is underpinned by our dedication to provide an inclusive learning environment which actively promotes and develops British Values as part of our Personal Development programme.  We prepare our students for life in modern Britain by developing an understanding of democracy, rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs as part of their Personal Development programme. In addition, we teach students how to engage with society and provide them with meaningful opportunities to do this, whilst building their confidence and resilience, as part of their character development.

Our Personal Development programme is delivered through weekly Personal Development lessons, Assemblies and Form time sessions, alongside additional events and workshops throughout the year (see Personal Development curriculum under the Programmes of Study section of the website). Through this curriculum, we seek every opportunity to engage with current events in the world and ensure that our curriculum is responsive to the needs of our community and students.  Our students value the opportunity to discuss these events with their peers in a safe and open environment which is free from judgement. The curriculum also ensures that students are aware of how to keep themselves safe from risks they may face as young people and adults and what support is available to them, alongside developing their understanding of how to remain healthy, both physically and mentally.

We provide opportunities for students to understand and experience how to be active citizens; including the Duke of Edinburgh and National Citizenship Service. Through the Personal Development curriculum, students are prepared for their next steps through the careers programme (see further detail on this in the Careers section of the website).

As a result of our broad and balanced curriculum our students leave Royds Hall with a moral sense of right and wrong, an understanding and respect for different faiths, feelings and values  and the necessary skills and knowledge to participate fully in life in Modern Britain as responsible, respectful and active citizens.
